Board of Directors
All Board members are volunteers and local residents,
who also happen to be avid Nordic skiers. With a wealth
of experience, ability, and diversity on our Board of
Directors, Mt. Shasta Nordic is poised for success in
future years. As a community-based organization, each
of us has a say in its operation and growth. Please
feel free to discuss with the Board members any of your
ideas, concerns, and desires to help. Likewise, let
it be known if you yourself are interested in serving
on the Board!
Sean serves as President, responsible
for overseeing the overall operation of MSNSO. In addition, he
serves on the Fundraising, Public Relations, and Budget
Committees; acts as liaison with the Mt. Shasta Ski
Park and Forest Service; helps coordinate the Youth
Ski Team; and oversees permits and insurance. Sean has
spent over a decade as technician, management, and owner
in the ski & bicycle retail industry. A native of
Mt. Shasta, graduate of the University of Iowa, and
former professional mountain bike racer, Sean now co-owns
and wears the V.P. cap at Berryvale Grocery, where he
oversees a staff of 50. He serves on the Mt. Shasta
Recreation and Parks District Board of Directors, is
one of the directors of the Mt. Shasta Summit Century
bicycle event, and acts as Treasurer for the Mt. Shasta
Skate Park Project, a project of ACROSS, another local
501(c)(3) organization. Feel free to ask to see his
Ski Patrol certificate from 1989, when he served-despite
still being a minor-during the final season of the Castle
Lake Nordic Center.
Chris Carr is the co-director of Shasta Mountain Guides along with his wife Jennifer. Chris has a long history in the outdoor community as a local and international mountain guide as well as former director of Ski Patrol at the Mount Shasta Ski Park. Chris was born and raised in Massachusetts and earned a degree in Exercise Physiology from UMass, Amherst. He is a firm believer in enjoying an active outdoor lifestyle, and you will find Chris on skis, rock, or surfboard regularly. As director of a commercial guide service and an active enthusiast, Chris places great value on the beauty and recreational opportunities of the Mt. Shasta area. With his experience in the outdoor and ski industry, and a small business owner, Chris hopes his background can be a useful asset in maintaining and preserving the Mt Shasta Nordic Club.
As a founding member of MSNSO, Dave brings with him
skills associated with building construction, business
management, and promotion of competitive athletic events.
Dave owns a general contracting company and holds a
M.A. in Environmental Science which he utilizes in his
building projects by emphasizing "Green Building"
techniques. In addition to 20 years of building experience,
Dave is an avid outdoorsman, Nordic skier, and cyclist.
A competitive cyclist for 18 years, he has promoted
cycling events for the last twelve. Dave's main foci
as a Director will be the development of Nordic Center
facilities and the promotion of competitive ski events.
He is expected to be integral to the design and construction
of a new lodge and other structures at the Nordic Center.
Geoff serves as Secretary of MSNSO, and maintains the
organization's membership database, acts as liaison
with the Mt. Shasta Ski Park and Forest Service, and
oversees ski trail planning. If we ever appear organized,
it's Geoff's fault. Geoff's professional outdoor recreational
experience includes seven years in the outdoor recreation
industry, including two years as founder and director
of a youth whitewater kayak school, and three years
with the Steven's Pass Ski Patrol. With a Bachelors
of Science from the University of California at Davis,
Geoff is currently employed by Thomson Reuters, where
he works as a healthcare consultant, helping hospitals
identify opportunities, plan improvement, and monitor
for sustained results. He also serves on the board of
the Apline Medical Clinic, located in Mt Shasta.
Shanhong Lu, MD, PhD is an Internal Medicine physician,
with specialties in anti-aging and sports medicine.
Having started a successful weight-management class
in Mt. Shasta, she is project coordinator for the health
& wellness element of our organization, seeking
to involve participants in an aerobic, low-impact, safe-yet-enjoyable
winter exercise option. An enthusiastic Nordic and Telemark
skier, cyclist, and traveler, Shanhong is always eager
to encourage others to embrace health, wellness, and
fitness.
Craig brings his experience in ski instruction and a
long history of promoting the health benefits of exercise
to his position on the Board of Directors. Craig holds
a MS in Exercise Physiology from Long Island University
and has spent 20 years working in all facets of the
trade, including management, sales, instruction, and
cardiac rehabilitation. Craig's managerial work took
him to Holland, where he spent 11 years participating
in community cycling clubs, training for marathons,
and ski touring throughout Europe and Scandinavia. Recently
returned to the U.S., Craig has spent his winters as
an assistant manager and ski instructor at the former
Mt. Shasta Ski Park Nordic Center. Craig now spearheads
our Youth Nordic Ski Team.
Michael is a physics, engineering, and part-time physical education teacher at the College of the Siskiyous. Michael has recently served as chair of the COS curriculum committee, chair of the alternative calendar committee, and has served on numerous other COS committees including the academic senate executive committee. Michael is also outgoing president of Mount Shasta Pedali bicycle club. He has been an avid cyclist and Nordic skier for over twenty years. On the weekend, if Michael is not at the Nordic Center working to perfect his skating technique, he is probably out cycling. Michael's energy as board member will primarily be channeled toward the trail design and building projects, competitive events and clinics, and the design of the new lodge, where his engineering background will be tremendously useful.
