Nordic Center Information

History
Since the winter of '91-'92, the Mt Shasta Nordic Center has been a wonderful asset to our community. Together we have made over 65,000 visits to enjoy its groomed trails and friendly atmosphere. Starting this year, however, a new era will begin as the Nordic Center opens under the management of Mt Shasta Nordic Ski Organization, a California non-profit, public benefit organization. The Nordic Center operates on US Forest Service land under a special use permit. Since its inception, the Ski Park has held this permit and has steadfastly supported the Nordic Center operation, for which we, the skiing community, express our sincere appreciation.

This year, however, as negotiations for an extension of this permit proceeded, it became obvious that the present situation with the temporary facilities was not a viable long term solution. Alternatives were explored and a decision has been made. All parties involved agree that the most viable - and most vibrant - future for the Nordic Center lies in a community-based facility. The opportunities to develop and enhance the Nordic Center are tremendous within the framework of a non-profit, community-supported organization. This truly makes the Nordic Center a community endeavor, and the possibilities for our future are incredibly exciting!

Using the Trails
The Mt. Shasta Nordic Center trail system does not require a fee for use. Donations are appreciated, as all costs of operation and improvements are made possible by donations from members and users of the Nordic Center.

The Nordic Center has 25 km of groomed trails.

You are encouraged to become a member or make a daily trail use donation; $10 per adult & $5 per youth/senior are suggested. All costs of opperating are covered by donations. In addition, improvements to the facility and the future sustainability of trail grooming will be built on community and user donations.

Getting to the Trailhead
The Mount Shasta Nordic trailhead is located approximately 10 miles off of Interstate 5 near Mount Shasta City. From Interstate 5, exit onto Highway 89 South which is marked as the exit to McCloud. After 6.5 miles on Highway 89, turn left (north) on Ski Park Hwy. After 3.5 miles look for the Cross Country Ski parking lot on the left (one mile before the Downhill Ski Park).

A Note on Dogs
The groomed trails at the Nordic Center are no-dog trails.  Nothing personal: we’ve simply observed that skiers, dogs, and grooming don’t mesh very well.  Dogs are fine on the snowshoe trails and ungroomed areas within the Nordic Center.  Good etiquette requests that all dogs be leashed until they're away from the trailhead area.

For skiers who are looking to accompany their dog on a groomed trail, a new opportunity exists this season: just a few hundred yards beyond the Nordic Center at the sharp bend on the Ski Park Highway is a parking lot in which dogsleds often set up.  From that parking lot, the road is groomed several miles to the east.  It may not be as meticulous grooming as the Nordic Center, but dogs are fine!

For backcountry touring, the Sand Flat area on Mt. Shasta provides ideal terrain for skier and dog alike.  If you travel up Everitt Memorial Highway from downtown approximately 10 miles, you’ll find a couple small parking areas to the left side of the road.  Off into the woods to the same side lies wonderful touring opportunity.
